Starting this week, we would like you to walk with us into the world of winged wonders. Salim Ali bird sanctuary, in Thattekad, Kerala, is one of the best birding locations in the Indian Peninsula with over 250 species of birds.
The Sanctuary is the best place to spot the rare Sri Lanka Frogmouth also known as Ceylon Frogmouth. This nocturnal bird is a master of camouflage and spends the daytime in dense undergrowth making it literally impossible to spot. Thanks to our expert birding guide Eldose we were lucky to spot 3 different pairs of frogmouth during a 3 hour walk in the sanctuary.

The Indian Pitta is a brightly colored bird and it visits Thattekad during winters and spends a few months.

This collared Scops-Owl gave me time just enough for 2 images, I was lucky to come off with this shot.

Those Ceylon birds are....weird and beautifull! Great series of birds;)
Totally awesome shots Thomas! I bet your flash gets a lot of use working in this environment.
I noticed you use the D-300. How do you like it? I just purchased one about 2 months ago and I love it. I used it on our recent road trip, along with my D-70 which I also love.
Also, I love your choice of music on your Blog. It really makes it fun to write and listen to some of the best music ever made! Is it a plugin that you added? I might want to do something similar eventually.
'Excellent' is too small a word for these shots.
Your aim, to share your experiences in the Indian jungle with the internet community, is truly praiseworthy. The photo reportages you published to date are very interesting and well worth reading and seeing. I especially like the pictures of the elephants and the Ceylon frogmouth.
Outstanding photographs!
Thanks so much for your sympathy and best wishes, it is much appreciated.
This is some very unusual and special shot! We do no which words to use here -
The first photo is so intense. The eye, looking directly at us, - it took us by surprise -
we did not know that a bird could have an eye so similar to a human (no photo tricks right?)
It is SO sharp, so close, so unusual
very well done!!
Yes we admit it; we are quite jealous, this is more than amazing.
It is wonderful.
Bravo!!!
We just LOVE that shot!!
(not to mention the music; hotel California - an old hit from our youth too..... ;-) )
Lovely series. In particular, I like the photo of the Ceylon Frogmouth.
Just incredible. The detail that you've captured here is remarkable. Thank you for sharing these with us!
Wow - that frog mouthed bird is aptly named! So neat to see all of these birds!
Great bird shots, I especially like the owl.
You made my day when you showed up on My Birds Blog and left a comment there. I appreciate your visit and your link here.
I have added you to the blogs that I follow which is akin to iGoogle, I guess but is new to me. So I will, hopefully, get to see your posts as they come out.
Your work is faultless. It is certainly an inspiration to me and to a lot of people who visit your blog. I will mention your URL on one of my posts so that will also introduce a lot of my visitors to your blog.
I would say you and whoever else is taking pictures are brilliant photographers and thankfully I found your site.

Great amazing photos… I am now convinced that I will also buy a Nikon d300…
I am sure equipment alone does not make one as a great photographer, I believe it helps….

These are fascinating pictures. Some of the best animal shots that I have seen. The details and clarity are excellent. My favorite one is the owl, love the big eyes and tones.

Framed & Shot : All shots are in the wild, no setup, no tricks. In some images I have applied red-eye correction.
Diane : Thanks for your initiative in referring us to your bird friend.
Abraham : T & S Stands for Thomas (myself) & Shilpy (My wife). We both enjoy exploring the jungles of India and photography ofcourse. Thank you so much for planning to write about us in your blog.
Arve : These pictures were shot with a D80, I bought the D300 just about 8 months back. The D80 is no match for the D300 though.
Reza : I too don't shoot wildlife (mammals) with flash. With birds, I was told and also noticed that they are not at all worried by the light from the flash
Thank you all...once again
Your snap of the Scops-Owl is incredible... Wonderfully documented. Always a treat stopping by here... Keep up the excellent work...
