Animals of India #3 - Biggest herd of Elephants

During one of our trips to Bandipur national park, we had been on the evening safari, which turned out to be awfully quiet, with absolutely no sightings. However, it was a beautiful evening and we did not let disappointment, of not sighting wildlife, dampen our spirits. As we started our way back to the jungle lodge, we suddenly saw a group of 5 Asiatic Elephants in a clearing. We were happy that we got an opportunity to photograph this group of Elephants, as they were not just adults but also a calf amidst them. Little did we realize that this small group of 5 Elephants would grow into a herd of 16-17 elephants and pose for a family picture! The series of images depict the scene as it unfolded.

Hey S, Congratulations! You've just won first prize in my Most Talented Friend Contest. Awesome Elephant pics. Though I must say, the Mongoose title pic is by far my favouritest!

This was so exciting to see - I love elephants and admire their intelligence. Outstanding photos.

you wont believe it. I had the same exp last year when 4 elephants became 30 and the van driver was stupid enough to drive away before the whole group would unveil itself. Just goes to show how good these elephants are camouflaging themselves inspite of their size. Some of my photos at http://www.wildlifesanctuaryindia.com/wildlife/

By the way your leopard photos are awesome.
What is your equipment?
Best regards
Bala

These images are wonderful.... they are such incredible creatures and their ability to communicate among each other seems very evident here. It must have been a real thrill to see them in their own environment.

Beautiful photos! Although I adore the big cats, like the tiger and snow leopards; elephants really are my favourites.

I had the pleasure, some years ago, of meeting a young Indian elephant (2 years old) who was being socialized at a busy downtown location in Totonro. While I spoke to her handler, I noticed she was inching closer to me, her curiosity evident. Having no fear of her, I was a bit surprised when she reached into my coat pocket and scarfed a peanut in the shell with her trunk. She looked quite chastened when he told her she had to give the peanut back.

In the end, after I petted her nose for some time, I slipped the peanut back and she deftly popped it into her mouth.

Whenever I see photos of elephants it reminds me of the gentleness and intelligence of the young one I encountered.

My sister and I have a niece (small Claire) who has the passion of elephants and horses, now it goes up on horseback. Also I doubt that day up a elephant I know it will for them to a real life passion.
Your pictures are very beautiful.
Thanks for comments in my blog.
