The Indian Gaur is the largest species of wild cattle, bigger than the Cape Buffalo, Water Buffalo and Bison. The biggest populations are found today in India. The wildlife sanctuaries in South India namely Kabini, Bandipur, Nagarhole, Masinagudi, BR Hills are the best place to see them. Unlike the Elephants, the Gaur are essentially timid and avoid confrontations.
Here are a collection of images of this massive bodied mammal known for its intimidating stares. All images have been shot handheld with the Nikon D300 and Nikon 300mm f2.8 lens.
All these almost full frame images have been cropped for composition, and post processing to the extent of levels correction, saturation enhancement and sharpening.
This image of a bull (weighs close to one Tonne) was taken at 1/320s, f5.6, ISO 640, -0.3EV.

Awesome photos as usual. I envy your access to the wildlife in India. I cant wait to go back there, even if its only to get some great wildlife shots.
Terrific shots! Your horned mammals reminded me of a shot I took a few years ago in Yellowstone... a Deja Vu that will post tomorrow.
I do truly enjoy your fabulous wildlife shots :-)
You depicted the Indian Gaur as a proud and beautiful animal. I especially like the side views on the first two images. As always, your photographs are exceptional!

Some great looking photos, not your typical birds ;) but the pictures are awesome and I would have enjoyed to be there with you looking at the awesome animals.
Thanks for sharing.
A beautiful set of images. The third one down has to be my favorite.
Wowwwwwwwwwww! Beautiful and strong animals... Fantastic "potraits" and quality the pictures.
Cheers! Bea :)
Awesome portraits. They look very healthy and dangerous too :)
Thomas: Those are outstanding captures of those neat cattle. You did a wonderful job of capturing all their looks. I love the ears and cuts, quite different on each.
Wooowww!!! This is THE beast. Incredible. Are they not dangerous?
Your NikonD300 assocaited to your 300mmm/f2,8 makes some miracle... Oh ok sorry your photograph quality too :-)
Tese are great pictures as usually, and I'm so happy to visit your blog. it makes me discover the rest of the wolrd!!!
Beautiful shots.. here in Western America, each spring we help our rancher friends brand their calves. I don't think I would want to mess with these big guys.. great photos and info.. thanks for sharing
Thomas,
Such impressive captures of these huge creatures! The close ups are quite intense..and the colors are wonderful. Is the bull seen in the first and last shot, older than the others? He just looks aged more and why the splits in his ears? His eyes are quite captivating!!
These are some amazing shots. They're wonderful! What an impressive looking animal. It would be the size and those horns that I found intimidating, not the eyes. :-D
Tack sharp, stunning images as always.
Awesome photos as always Thomas! I love the sub-adult image, very cute "little" guy.
That's one impressive beast :-)
Great photos. They have such cute ears!
Wow.. What a big fella.. I love the third one from above. Great portrait and superb colors - What more can a photographer ask? :)
amazing foto...
love the fourth pictures...the dof so great, composition so nice, greeny blur in the background make the bulls head look clearly
Your photos of the Gaur are magnificent as always. Do you sell your photos to a wildlife magazine? If not...you should! They are beautiful.
you have taken some incredible portraits of these big critters! Simply- wonderful!
Amazing and exceptional images as usual Thomas. The last one is quite majestic!

They are huge and very interesting looking animals. Great shots!
Fantastic series ... i love it!!
The last comment is from me .. sorry Thomas
I came here from JC at Castle Ruins, and I'm glad I did. These are wonderful looking animals, with attractive faces. Thank you for introducing them to me.
Stunning shots Thomas, as always! These guys are very scary looking, but beautiful! Those eyes stare a hole right through me.
You always have such nice shots! I love this fellow! He has some big floppy ears. :)
They could do some damage with those horns. What powerful looking creatures.
Beautiful shots, Thomas.
Oooh! I just arrived via Barbara Martin to see what the other awarded blogs were like.
Very nice pictures; the wildlife of India is as photogenic as the human occupants of the subcontinent. I always enjoy returning, and I know I will be returning here too.
I am going to have to thank Barbara for these introductions.
Tschuess,
Chris
