The Muntjac Deer (Indian Muntjac) is commonly called the "Barking Deer" due to the bark-like alarm call it makes when it sights a predator. Indian Muntjacs are solitary animals, rarely observed with other Muntjacs, except during the rutting season.
Though Barking Deers are widespread in India, they are challenging photography subjects; thanks to their extremely shy behavior.
This image of the female Barking Deer was taken on a misty morning in the Bandipur wildlife sanctuary. D300, 300mm f2.8 lens, ISO 800, f2.8, 1/800s and handheld are the technical specs here.
This image of a sub-adult male was taken in the Badra wildlife sanctuary. D300, 300mm f2.8 lens, ISO 400, -1.0EV, f2.8, 1/500s and handheld are the technical specs.
We have been fortunate enough to get close to this Deer on a couple of occasions and all the images posted here have been taken at 300mm focal length. The first image of a handsome male Barking Deer was taken in the BR hills national park. D80, 300mm f2.8 lens, ISO 800, f2.8, 1/100s and handheld are the technical details.

This cropped side profile image (D300, 300mm f2.8 lens, ISO 400, -1.0EV, f2.8, 1/250s, handheld) of the male deer shows the canine tooth, which is considered to be a more dangerous weapon than their short antlers in a combat situation.
This is an image of another sub-adult male, which was seen along with the sub-adult males shown in the third and fourth images. This was one of the rare occasions when we saw two Barking Deer together. Tech specs is D300, 300mm f2.8 lens, ISO 400, -1.0EV, f2.8, 1/1000s, handheld.

Very nice! What a tongue that boy has!
Very strange small deer.
I really don't know anything about asian animals.
Thank to you I'm learning a lot.
Very Good Pictures as usual...
Wondeful photos of a deer I've not seen before. How interesting about the canine teeth, the antlers and the barking. Thank you, Thomas.
Great photos! I'm used to white-tail deer, which are common to the little corner of the world I inhabit.
Thanks for stopping by the other day. I really appreciate your comments and feedback. People's facial expressions have always interested me as a subject for photography. I find the hardest part to be taking the shot without getting a portrait pose of some sort. Thanks again; come visit again soon!
Awesome series as always. The image that you captured with the extended tongue is hilarious and my fav. Blue Skies.
Cool shot, the one with the long tongue is great, very funny. Weird looking deer too with the canine teeth sticking out.
As always, a pleasure to look your photos.
Waw! sa langue comme une main !

What amazes me most about this creature, Thomas, is how far up the antlers the fur seems to grown. I've never seen that before!
The pics are great. I saw barking deer for the first time at K Gudi. I wondered why we saw just a glimpse of single barking deer now and then, unlike the chital, which didn't seem to mind photographs, and werent really scared of us. Now I realise that seeing even two barking deer together is a rare sight!!
beautiful shots again!
Fantastic photos Thomas it looks very like our Blue Duiker which is also small but grey in colour very long tounge :)
This has an extremely strange looking pair of horn / antlers Thomas, and love the tongue one too. I echo Philips remark on the Blue Duiker.
EXCELLENT PHOTOGRAPHY AND INTERESTING INFO. THANKS
Excellent shot from your 300 2.8 VR lens. I'm still saving for this lens and your results impressed me a lot !
Hello! Thanks so much for visiting me today, it is so wonderful and honored to have the visit from you. I love your blog a lot for the big picture with such an adventure! thanks a lot for your suggestion, I am still learning how to upload photos since I am a new comer wandering in the bloggyland. :-) warm greetings from East Borneo! come and visit my land..?? :-)
Thomas: That was quite a deer show and some great captures. That tounge shot was special.
My grandkids just loved your elephant captures.
Incredible pictures. That tongue is crazy! I never knew this animal existed.
I love the one of it licking it's nose. That's one long tongue! Such interesting animals!
What a marvelous series of this beautiful animal. I like the detail you achieved at 300mm with such nice color. That one unbelievable tongue.
great work my friend - I enjoy it

What an absolutely beautiful animal. Love all the different points-of-view..and the little education you've provided. His tongue is increcible!!!
Woow, magnificent again and again... They do have a very long tong!!!
I love the last one playing with the shadows!
Elegant! Simply elegant. That's how I would describe this animal. Solitary and enchanting, something only nature could produce, and you've done a phenomenal job of capturing that.
Thank you so much for sharing these exquisite photos with us, many of whom will never—never see such creatures in person. You gift us with your experiences and images...
These are amazing photo's. Much different then our deer in Westcliffe. Don't know how much time you spent on my site, know there are a few photos of our mule deer.
Thanks for the nice comment about my bird photo. Come back again.
I love exploring other parts of the world through blogging.
what a sweet little ting - with quite a ehm.... not exactly charming tongue ;-) but impressive for sure!
Again; some very nice shots!
Great photos as always with this interesting deer (actually I never heard about such a deer til now). The third one with that handsome long tongued male is my favourite.
Hello Thomas!
Wow what a neat looking deer! I have never seen anything like this before! Great way you captured it too, in all of its beautiful angles!
These are fantastic and Incredible photos....and love the education I get here.
A fantastic series as usual Thomas!
The lighting on the last picture is exceptional!
Very entertaining series of such handsome, majestic creatures!
What a strange little guy. I don't think I want to have those teeth sink into me. A wonderful series, as usual.
Beautiful ! What a serie again ! I love the way their horns grow... and what a tongue !! :-0
Amazing tongue....and even more amazing that you should catch the moment.
There's some exceptional lighting in some of these scenes, well done.
Actually, this photograph, like the vast majority of mine, are hand-held. The combination of a steady hand and the VR lens lets me get clear photos with a shutter length as long as 1/15 using only the available lighting, assuming the subject isn't moving too much. Though to compensate for a longer shutter speed and the subject moving, I take a series and then pick the best one.
Those are some great shots - but I have to tell you...when I saw the size of that tongue ...I just laughed right out loud! That certainly is the capture of the day...month...year? It just has that 'cool factor' - I give it a 10!
Such a unique animal! I love their triangular faces and interesting horns.
Great shots, Thomas!
It reminds me of an antelope deer mix. :) I love his tongue!
another great set of shots, thanks for sharing!
A great set of photographs of an unusual animal. Its canine teeth, the short but pointed antlers, the long tongue and the bark-like alarm call are really an unfamiliar combination of traits.
So unusual and interesting to look at! Beautiful shots - and that photo of its long tongue made me laugh!
This image is stunning. So sharp with such a clarity in deed
Magnifiques moments !!! La 3ème photo est excellente.
What an absolutely stunning deer!
Fantastic photos on your blog. I am glad I found it.
That is outstanding! I have never seen anything like that Muntjac Deer. What a capture!
That photo with his tongue out - I actually laughed at that!
Amazing set!
Third capture is priceless! Love it. As always, thanks for stopping by. =) I appreciate your comments... It's what keeps me going.

These are amazing images! I love what you do with light. I never saw one of these when I was in the south of India.
I never tire of admiring these little animals so sweet! the pictures are of great beauty! but with the Nikon 300mm f / 2.8, I understand! even if it does not create the image! I love beauty, sharpness of the image!
Bonne journée!
Excellent work. I agree...an unusual looking animal. I would have never guessed it for a deer. They almost have a human quality about their faces.
Beautiful photos! we only have red deer around here we see them now and then.
Great photos! Your blog is amazing!
Thomas,
Such interesting pictures..but do they really bark?? Our white tail deer will snort at you if your really bother them and their defense is their hoofs..interesting canine tooth on the barking deer..
like the rest I had to laugh at that tongue!! quite a good shot!!
Thanks so much for visiting my blog and commenting. It allowed me to find your site and your amazing photographs! Consider me a new follower :)
Outstanding. Great captures, especially the 3rd. Good work!!
Excellent collection of pics :)
These deer are beautiful! What a tongue that one has!
That's a beautiful creature - tongue and all.
Lovely.
That tongue is long! Beautiful series as always!
Thomas as always your images are so amazing, and not that easy to take as you mention. I wish I could pick favorite one, but all of them are my favorite now. Excellent. Anna :)
Lol, the one with the long tongue - I love all - wonderful views.
The tongue shot is extraordinary. I didn't know how long their tongues are.
PS: Yes, my lion shot was done with a flash. It was already to dark to get a decent exposure without flash. Very well spotted.
Awesome captures here! I especially like the shot of the deer sticking its tongue out.
And thanks for your recent visit to my site! You have a great collection of photos here – I'll be back to check out your new photos.
