Birds of India #24 - The national bird - Peacock

Peacock, or Male Indian Peafowl, is a beautiful bird known for its beautiful and brilliant colored fan like tail plumage. The Peacock's plumage can be best appreciated during its courtship dance, which happens on the ground when the male Indian Peafowl displays its long train of feathers dancing and showing off in front of the peahen.

We were fortunate to observe and photograph this wildlife spectacle a couple of times and here is a collection of images showing the brilliance of the Peacock's plumage during its courtship dance.

All images were taken handheld, using jeep rails for additional support, with the D300, 300mm f2.8 with 2x TC.

The striking factor of the Peacock's plumage are the iridescent hues of
green, blue, yellow, and brown, which look amazingly different in every angle of light. The three images below show you this phenomenon. The sunlight is falling right to left at almost right angles both on the Peacock and us. Do people eat peacocks? I don't know so I thought you might know. When I was smaller some farmers kept them like watchdogs.

You probably don't remember when people lived and died at home and endured wakes. I wrote about it here. http://bing-it.blogspot.com/

I think the peacock is one of the most beautiful birds. They are all over the L.A. Arboretum and I've got so many pics of them. The dance is interesting to watch and I love the sound they make when they first spread that tail and then shake their booty. :-)

Gorgeous photos!

Wow, your Peacock shots are stunning! The colours and the details are so vivid. I thought using a 2x TC might diminish the quality but it really hasn't. Excellent series of shots.

jason said...

Beautiful! I've always loved these birds, but here the only place to seem them is in a zoo (and I don't do zoos). It's nice to see them in the wild as they should be.

And while the close-ups show brilliant detail and color, I really have to say it's the full views I like the most: they help put the entire display into perspective with a sense of how magnificent--and large--the plumage is. Fantastic work, Thomas!

Tina said...

ahk! I'm speechless with awe! Oh my goodness..how beautiful..especially those close ups! You really out did yourself this time. You must have been thrilled with this subject!! ahk! still speechless.

Oh Thomas this is heavenly and what is even more awesome is that I just saw one live this past Friday at a provincial park near us. We usually take bike rides there to visit the peacocks (2 females and a male) and I always hope and wish for a show, but nothing.

Well this past Friday, I saw a beautiful courting dance, just like the photos here show and guess what I didn't have my camera with me this time. But what stayed in my mind is perhaps worth even more :) So I love that you have the photos of this, where I can come and reminice :)
