Indian Wildlife - Bonnet Macaque

The common Bonnet Macaque is a species of primate found only in Southern India. and they are found in almost every kind of forest. A striking behavior of these primates is that they have the tendency of gravitating towards human habitations. In fact, it is interesting to note that significant populations of completely wild Bonnet Macaques in interior forests have rarely been reported.

Their proximity to humans have led to many man-animal conflicts. We have read research reports, which indicate that several groups of monkeys have been completed eliminated over the last two decades and that some areas that had abundant populations earlier are now completely devoid of them. As per wikipedia, it is possible that if this scenario continues the common Bonnet Macaque of today, which is in the least concern, may well become endangered species of tomorrow.

Here's a series of images of this social species of primate. Pl. note that all images are of wild Bonnet Macaques; however most of them have been photographed close to human habitats within Wildlife Sanctuaries.

All images are copyright of Thomas and Shilpy. Pl. contact us at suresh_anand@hotmail.com in case you are interested in any of the images.

Hi Thomas,
This is a splendid message. I love the information we are getting bit I've to admit that your pictures are breathtaking... It is a combination of very original composition such as the close-up portrait (n°4), beautiful subject such as the first and second, and nice attitude such as third and fifth.... A beautiful message with sharp image and wonderful bokeh... Perfect as usual!

Ive seen some of the conflicts that you speak abt..wont be surprised if they go the house sparrow way..

Its the same story with our Vervets. They are being squeezed into smaller territories and conflict with humans daily. They are such wizened creatures aren't they?I find them so appealing. Lovely photographs.

this is a beautiful post...I read an article recently that the larger the eyes of a creature the more we find it "cute" and are drawn to it. Many of the comments here are about the eyes...and I too am drawn to this animal.

Lovely close up of the eyes. I lived in a area full of jungles and they were frequent visitors to our kitchens and in our classrooms. They had abs no fear of the humans and we constantly had to keep brooms and sticks ready to make noise and drive them away!

Magical and moving. Fantastic shots, Thomas! Let's hope these stunning creatures are given the respect and room to live that they deserve. It would be a shame to add them to the list of species we've pushed to the brink--or over the edge entirely.

Fantastic. A sad story too that they may not make it because they are not afraid of human beings.

To them, I am guessing they think that we are a pitiful example of sexual promiscuity that lead to a deformed race of beings similar in appearance to them but not their cousins.

A beautiful example of capturing the essence of life.
