Birding in India - The Malabar Grey Hornbill

The Malabar Grey Hornbill is a Hornbill species that is endemic to the Western Ghats in India and it is common to see them in the plantations along the Ghats. Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, near Cochin, Kerala is a popular destination to observe and photograph these winged wonders.

During our visit to this Sanctuary, we saw them flying around in small groups almost everywhere. And a patient birder can easily get some frame filling compositions like these.

Very intense looking and handsome bird. His head reminds me of a cross between a toucan and a Blue Heron. Lovely photos!

I've heard that Hornbills can be very aggressive (territorial fights etc.). That bill is a pretty nifty piece of armoury.
Nice shooting Thomas.

Thomas, another great collection. Interesting bird. It is amazing how evolution gave each bird species different beak design. Anna :)
